Wenatchee cyclist Tyler Farrar

WENATCHEE — Tyler Farrar finished 18th in the final 2009 world rankings, released Monday by the International Cycling Union.

The Wenatchee native was the top American in the rankings, and the only cyclist from the United States in the top 30. Lance Armstrong was 31st.

Astana rider Alberto Contador was first.

Farrar’s sprint nemesis, Mark Cavendish of Great Britain, was eighth.

The rankings are determined by points awarded to top finishers in 24 races over the course of the year.

Farrar’s Garmin-Slipstream team finished 11th in the final team standings.

Garmin-Slipstream also announced today that it has extended its title sponsorship with Garmin for an additional three years.
