Governor requests disaster assistance
Tuesday, September 29, 2009
OLYMPIA — Low precipitation this year prompted Gov. Chris Gregoire to request federal farm disaster assistance for six central Washington counties including Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan and Grant.
Gregoire requested the counties be declared disaster areas because of agriculture-related losses due to drought.
According to a news release from the office of the governor, Okanogan county ranchers have reported the “worst conditions they have seen in years.”
If the USDA declares the counties disaster areas, farmers could receive emergency low-interest loans from the Farm Service Agency.
