OKANOGAN — Republicans Charleen Groomes and Rae Jean Kelley will face each other in November for the job of Okanogan County clerk.
With 72 percent of the vote counted, Groomes finished on top in Tuesday’s primary vote, taking 2,572 votes for nearly 43 percent of the total.
Kelley placed second, with 1,847 votes or nearly 31 percent of the total. Both Groomes and Kelley are from Okanogan.
Third-place finisher Cindy Gagne of Omak captured 26 percent of the vote, or 1,585 ballots, to be eliminated from the race.
The clerk position is being vacated by Jackie Bradley, who has been clerk for nearly 38 years and will retire at the end of her term in December.
Voter turnout in Okanogan County was 32 percent, according to the auditor’s website. The remaining 1,800 votes cast should be counted Friday.
