The Tonasket boys basketball team lost for the first time this season on Tuesday, while the Waterville girls posted a victory for the first time in two years.
Brewster came up big from outside in the third quarter to pull away for a 69-53 victory over Tonasket on the first day of play in the Brewster Christmas Tournament.
“The big thing was in the third quarter they made a run, and we came back with five 3s,” said Brewster coach Dwight Pflugrath.
The loss drops Class 1A Tonasket to 7-1. All of its games this season have come against opponents from the Central Washington 2B League.
In Waterville, meanwhile, the Shocker girls won for the first time since Feb. 3, 2009, beating Wilson Creek 46-26.
“It’s definitely a huge step for us,” said Waterville coach Kassie Ludeman. “I’m so proud of how hard the girls have been working. In the past, we didn’t really know how to win, but today we realized the intensity and the aggressiveness that it takes.”
Alex Landon and Kassidy Simmons each had 14 points for the Shockers.
Rising to the challenge
The Okanogan girls were able to beat Republic 59-35 despite being without their leading scorer, Kara Staggs, who is dealing with an undisclosed illness. Coach Gary Smith said there is no timetable for Staggs’ return.
“She’s talked to some doctors, but nobody can put their finger on it yet,” Smith said. “Hopefully we can get her back soon, but right now we’re just concerned about her health.”
The Pateros boys gave up a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter of their game against Kittitas, but Blayne Harvey hit a jumper with three seconds left to force overtime, and Zach Lambert made a layup with a second remaining in the extra period to give the Billygoats a 51-49 win.
