PASCO — The Wenatchee girls basketball team took one more step Saturday toward the team’s first league title in 34 years, beating Pasco 68-33.

Michaela George had 23 points and 13 rebounds, and Lexxi Hallberg also had a double-double, with 15 points and 13 boards for the Panthers, who now need only beat Sunnyside at home Tuesday to wrap up their first league championship since 1976.

The Panthers are still tied with Southridge, which beat Davis 62-39 on Saturday. If both teams win out, they would share the league crown, but Wenatchee would be the No. 1 seed for the playoffs thanks to a random draw held at the start of the season.

“The girls are excited, but we’re not going to be overconfident against Sunnyside,” Panthers coach Ron Stone said. “A lot of teams would like like to trade spots with us right now, but we’re not giving it up.”

The Bulldogs tried a box-and-one to slow down Panthers leading scorer Dani Hallberg, who finished with 13 points and seven assists. Point guard Amy Scheumann was the fourth Panthers player in double figures with 12 points, and she also had a team-high eight assists.

The Panther boys stayed one game behind Southridge — 65-58 winners over Davis — in the race for second place in the CBBN Columbia Division.

“We held them to 27 percent shooting, and you should win most games when you do that,” Panthers coach Brent McGinnis said.

Connor Smith and Cooper Helm led the way for Wenatchee with 15 and 14 points respectively. Smith also had 15 rebounds.
