Marie Goldade
Thursday, February 11, 2010
Pullman and former Wenatchee resident, Marie Goldade, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died on Monday, February 8, 2010, due to complications from a sudden illness. Marie and her twin sister, Alice, were born during a Good Friday blizzard on March 21, 1913, near Colome, SD, to Leroy and Mary (Donovan) Weak. Four brothers followed. After graduating from Winner High School in 1930, Marie lived at home for several years. Then she spent two years providing housekeeping and childcare for a local family. Life in South Dakota in the 1930's presented numerous challenges. Marie loved to tell about coping with drought, the Depression, grasshopper infestations and dust storms. Marie completed nurse's training in Hot Springs, SD and worked at the hospital there. She moved to Omak, WA in 1940, following her parents and brothers. Marie worked at the hospitals in Leavenworth and Omak. During World War II, after spending two years gaining enough weight to enlist, she joined the Navy Nurse Corps and was stationed in Oakland, CA. During the following decade, she worked at the Okanogan Clinic, was stationed in Bremerton for two years during the Korean War, earned a Bachelor's degree in nursing from Seattle University in 1954, and spent two years at the University of Washington, working on her Master's in nursing. While living in Omak, Marie met the love of her life, Anthony Goldade, a Field Auditor for the Internal Revenue Service. They married on September 29, 1956, in Seattle, then moved to Wenatchee, WA, where they lived for the next 50 years. With the birth of her daughter, Mary, Marie settled into a life focused on her husband, family and church, a role she cherished. A son, Michael, joined the household in 1966. Marie was an active member of the Catholic parishes in Wenatchee, East Wenatchee and Pullman, and a longtime member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She also enjoyed traveling, baking, reading and oil painting.
Marie is survived by her husband, Tony of Pullman; her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and John Sutherland of Pullman; her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Lynne Goldade of Everett, WA; four grandchildren, Julia of Moscow, ID, Laura (Sam) Wilbourn of Seoul, South Korea, Kathleen of Denver, CO and Michelle of Walla Walla, WA; two great-grandchildren, Elijah and Rosemia of Moscow; and a brother, Bob (Alice) Weak of Bend, OR. Marie's parents, sister and three brothers preceded her in death.
Rosary is at 7 p.m. Friday, February 12, 2010, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 13, 2010, both at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wenatchee. Interment will be at the Wenatchee City Cemetery. Memorial gifts are suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pullman. Online guest book is at www.kimballfh.com.
