Donald Gale Marshall passed away January 18, 2010, at Central Washington Hospital. He was born July 11, 1930, in Manson, WA. He was the youngest child of Wendell and Zelia (McDaniel) Marshall. He attended school in Manson, graduating from high school in 1949. He served in the Army during the Korean War in 1951, and was honorably discharged in 1953. He married the love of his life, Lulla Mae Pitt, that same year. During their early years of marriage, he worked as a logger and laborer. As his young family grew, he recognized the need to better support them and, in 1961, moved them to the Columbia Basin, where he was hired by the Bureau of Reclamation. He was a ditch rider on many of the canals that supplied irrigation water to farmers and later advanced to Assistant Water Master. In 1965 to 1967, he worked for the Job Corps in Moses Lake, teaching young men how to run heavy equipment. During this time, he and his students built the Summer Falls State Park. In 1967, Don and his family moved back to the Chelan area, where he and Lulla bought an orchard. In 1978, they sold the orchard and formed Marshall Excavation, where he did many projects in North Central Washington, including the property development on the south shore of Lake Chelan, now called Morning Sun Estates. Don enjoyed many outdoor activities; fishing, hunting, boating on Lake Chelan, snowmobiling and, after his retirement, traveling with Lulla in their RV.
Survivors include his brother, Robert Marshall of San Jose, CA; sister, Phyllis Marshall of Cashmere; sons, Richard Marshall of Enumclaw and Rusty Marshall of Chelan; daughter, Teresa Marshall of East Wenatchee; grandchildren, Devin (Alex) Town of Clarkston, Colleen (Dave) Miller of East Wenatchee, Hannah Marshall of Pullman and Zachary Simmons of Virginia; and great-grandson, Owen Miller of East Wenatchee. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 52 years, Lulla; and his brother, John Marshall.
Don's family would like to thank the staff at Hearthstone Cottage, for their loving care while he lived there.
A Celebration of Don's Life will be held Saturday, February 20, 2010, at 1:00 p.m., at the Manson United Methodist Church.
