Dorothy B. "Duffy" (Freeman) Evans
Tuesday, February 23, 2010
Dorothy B. "Duffy" (Freeman) Evans passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, February 18, 2010, a day before her 88th birthday. She was born on February 19, 1922, in International Falls, MN, to Evelyn and Marion Freeman. Dorothy and her two brothers, Robert and George, moved with their parents to Everett, WA, where she graduated from high school in 1940. She followed her high school sweetheart and future husband, Hugh, to Ellensburg, WA, where they attended Central Washington College, until their education was interrupted by WWII. They were married on January 8, 1944, and moved to Cashmere in 1946, where they have lived since. Dorothy postponed completing her education until the youngest of her five children started school. She obtained her B.A. in Education from Central Washington College in 1967, and taught fourth grade at Vale Elementary from then until 1983. In retirement, Dorothy and Hugh enjoyed travelling and cruising the San Juan Islands in their boat. They celebrated their 50th Anniversary the same year Hugh passed away, in 1994. Dorothy was a valued member of the Cashmere United Methodist Church for over 60 years, where she sang in the choir and participated in every aspect of church life. Many precious, lifelong friendships were forged within her cherished church family. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother extraordinaire, who skillfully planned each den meeting. What she loved best, was being surrounded by her large family of five children, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Dorothy was the ultimate caretaker, whether it was cooking, attending every event her family was participating in, selecting birthday and Christmas gifts specifically chosen for each person, having a tea party with her family or her dear group of women friends of 60 years. She was also very content to be at home reading, watching the Mariners, the Olympics, Grand Slam Tennis, or her favorite TV series, "As Time Goes By." Her sense of humor was unique and her laugh contagious. Most importantly, she was able to laugh at herself! Every one of her family, (in-laws, too) knew how fiercely she loved them-there was never a question there. We will miss ALL her wonderful qualities, stories, habits... intelligence, Scrabble, determination, classy appearance, the "laughing place," explosive laughter, burned pots and pans, driving experiences, tenaciousness, teaching experiences, never-give-up attitude, inclusiveness and lovely, insightful letters with impeccable handwriting. "It's a real good thing!"
Dorothy leaves behind her children, Jan (Jeff) Mitchell of Port Orchard, Gary (Christine) Evans of Everett, Ric (Jan) Evans of Cashmere, Joan (Jerry) Haaland of Grangeville, ID and Wendy (Mike) Tucker of Entiat; grandchildren, Brian (Jenny) Mitchell, Scott (Kari) Mitchell, Chelsea and Chase Evans, Jenny (Tim) Gerrish and Jaimee Haaland, Heidi (Brandon) Bush, Heather (Thor) Brincefield and Cory Gifford; great-grandchildren, Addison Mitchell, Nelson, Kiley and Heather Jo Bush and Kaia and Sofia.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., at the Cashmere United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the Cashmere United Methodist Church, 210 South Division Street, Cashmere, WA 98815.
