Woman in serious condition after four-car accident
Several others sent to hospital
Tuesday, January 5, 2010
ENTIAT — An East Wenatchee woman was in serious condition this morning at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with a head injury suffered in a four-car accident Thursday.
Donna E. Kain, 61, was in the hospital’s intensive care unit, a hospital spokeswoman said. She was transferred to Harborview from Central Washington Hospital.
Kain was injured in a car accident that sent four other people to Central Washington Hospital, according to a State Patrol report.
The accident happened at 4:50 p.m. Thursday when a Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven southbound by George S. Barnett, 56, of Wenatchee, crossed the centerline of Highway 97A about two miles south of Entiat, the report stated.
The Monte Carlo then struck head-on a northbound Mini Cooper driven by Dane R. Lewman, 31, of Chelan. He was treated at Central Washington Hospital for neck and back pain, then was released.
The Barnett car then struck two other vehicles, both driving northbound on the highway.
One was a Toyota Prius driven by Seth J. Chambers, 21, of East Wenatchee, who suffered neck and back pain. Chambers was in satisfactory condition this morning at Central Washington Hospital.
The other vehicle was a Honda Accord driven by Courtney R. Blanchfield, 20, of Entiat, who was reportedly not injured.
A passenger in the Mini Cooper, Amy A. Hefner, 34, of Wenatchee, was treated at Central Washington Hospital for neck, back and chest pain, then was released.
Kain was a passenger in the Barnett car, troopers said.
Troopers said Barnett refused treatment for a leg injury. Barnett was a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy from 1978 to 2001, according to Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal.

The Wenatchee World does not routinely write up information about any charges in connection with a news story until formal charges are filed by the prosecutor's office. As of this morning, no formal charges had been filed.

I hope that Donna pulls though. My thoughts are with her @ this time. Now, Dee Your comment to concernedcitizen confuses me. Why because of the Worlds artical "Woman arrested for third DUI in a month". It was noted she was Cited and release and ofcourse pending court dates for prior DUI's. Did the cited for possesion & Third DUI already get a formal charge by the time the World did that artical? What is Formal charges? A citation given by the officers or being arrested by the officers? By the way to our local Officers I'm glad to have You all out there.

Laura, In the case of "Woman arrested for third DUI in a month," the woman's name was not used in the story. That is because she had not been formally charged by the prosecutor's office. The protocol for the World is that we will name someone only after they have been formally charged by the prosecutor's office, not just when they have been arrested on suspicion of a charge. In situations other than simple traffic citations, a charge is not official until a prosecutor's office files it.

deeriggs as you stated no charges were formally charged there are pending charges. He was charged with Vehicular Assault due to being DUI and will be formally charged soon. Being an ex Sheriff he should know better then to drink and drive but oh wait he was kicked off the force for prior DUI's So obviously he hasn't learned his lesson and has almost killed many lives because he chooses to be "Above the Law"

I wonder if it is remembered that this guy was the DARE program instructor 20 years ago. I'm glad some of us didn't follow by example. I hope that he gets all he has coming to him for this accident. Way to go Steve. Bet you're proud of yourself now.

once again innocent people are injured and put into a life threatening situation by a drunk driver here in NCW. I fail to understand why this person hasn't been charged with the dui and at least 4 counts of attempted vechicular homicide! There is not one person out there that does not know it is illegal to drive after drinking or the dangers they put everyone in their path. When are our lawmakers going to pass some real laws that have teeth, not just feel good laws, that will actually deter people from driving drunk? How many more innocent people must be killed and crippled by drunk drivers before Olympia takes action? Sadly this will end up like all the other dui cases in court, innocent until proven not guilty with prision time not even considered.
My heart goes out to the families of the innocent victims this man injured. May they all recover rapidly.
