She worked as a nanny for a year and then went to work at Eller's Grocery Store in Papillion. In 1951, Opal and her best friend, Henrietta Spetman, bought one way tickets to Juneau, AK. She started work at Bert's Foods Center as a checker/cashier and met Eldon, when he was hired as the new meat cutter. Eldon and Opal were married January 6, 1952, in Juneau, where they made their home for the next 25 years. She raised three children while working as a bookkeeper at the 20th Century Supermarket, which they purchased in 1965. She retired in 1976, and began wintering in Arizona. They loved the warm weather and golf so much, they bought a house in Yuma, AZ, in 1979. She spent the next 20 years golfing and enjoying her family. In April, 1999, they moved to Wenatchee, WA, to be closer to family. Opal was an avid card and bingo player. She had currently resided at Bonaventure Retirement, where she was surrounded by new and old friends. She played pinochle several times a week with different groups of friends and always looked forward to her time with them.
