Fire and aid crews tend to Cameron M. Darnell, 18, a motorcyclist who was injured after what Washington State Patrol troopers say was a high-speed chase through East Wenatchee late Monday night. Also injured was Darnell’s passenger, Madison T. Miller, 18.

EAST WENATCHEE — A high-speed chase through East Wenatchee streets Monday night ended with a short foot pursuit and two 18-year-olds suffering from road rash.

Treated at Central Washington Hospital were motorcycle driver Cameron M. Darnell and passenger Madison T. Miller, according to a Washington State Patrol report.

The incident began at about 11:15 p.m. when a trooper saw a motorcycle speeding and driving erratically near the west end of the Sen. George Sellar Bridge, said Trooper Rich Magnussen, a spokesman for the State Patrol. Near Highway 28 and 13th Street Northeast, the trooper caught up with the motorcycle and activated lights and siren, but the motorcycle raced off at speeds between 80 and 100 mph. The bike went out of control on 11th Street Northeast near Hale Lane, causing the injuries to the driver and passenger.

Magnussen said the driver fled the scene but was caught a few minutes later in a backyard. A trooper and an East Wenatchee police officer were involved in the chase.

Magnussen said Darnell would be summoned into court on suspicion of two felonies, eluding an officer and hit-and-run driving. He was in satisfactory condition this morning at the hospital. Miller was treated and released for her injuries.

What do they mean, "summoned into court"? Are they telling us they'll arrest on the spot for a drug offense but someone who knowingly and willfully acts in a manner to endanger others' lives gets to go be pampered in the hospital and then go home?

Bella~ to answer your question. Yes, he left her on the ground and jumped two fences to try to get away. He was arrested in my yard. His first words, "Im hurt", the police said something like, "well, you should see your girlfriend". Then he said, "I was on my way back to get/see her". It was hard to hear everything. But that's pretty much what was said.
All that just to avoid a ticket or even a night in jail.

Option A) Pull over, and get an $80 ticket

Option B) Speed off, crash, severely injure yourself, get your girlfriend hurt and REALLY mad at you, probably go to jail and get a BIG fine.

Fantasy Option C) Speed off because you are above the law, and those stupid cops will never catch up to Mr. Invincible, and no one will ever do anything bad to you, and your girlfriend will think of you as her hero, because you are now a "bad boy".

This is so reminiscent of the Daniel Peterson incident last year, where he ran a stop sign at high speed on his motorcycle and nearly killed two people when he demolished the vehicle that he crashed into. He also had a history of eluding the police at high speed.

I guess history is going to keep repeating itself. I would bet that Daniel would weep over the fact that others still seem to have not learned from his mistake.

Whoa whoa whoa...Nate what do you mean they should not have been chasing them up the street? Usually when you are speeding or violating the law you get pulled over and usually the person pulls to the side of the road and accepts responsibility. So how are all these incidences the cops fault for chasing them. Just because you have a bike doesn't mean there is any difference from being in a vehicle and getting pulled over. This is exactly what is wrong with young kids and their bikes. You have to be responsible enough to control yourself on your bike or you should not be on the streets.

I actually do support the idea that there should be more stringent criteria regarding when police engage in a high speed pursuit, such as during or after the commission of a violent felony when risking others can be justified. There has been much loss of life that could have been prevented, both of police officers and bystanders. I don't see any reason why the perp cannot be picked up later at home or work and have the entire book thrown at them.
.
But, it happened and it is what it is. This idiot kid should be cooling his heels in jail right now, period.

Also, forgive my poor memory, but Danny was not being pursued when he died, was he? He had eluded in the past but the night he died was DWI home from a party and simply speeding like a moron and blew a stop sign. I fail to see how the police are responsible for what happened to Danny unless you consider that he should have had his bike permanently impounded and license revoked.

If he isn't in the hospital he is at home. You only get a chance to pay bail after being incarcerated and having a bail hearing in front of a judge. A future summons is different.

I don't think more people would do it if it carried a special charge that meant more jail time, making it a very serious offense. After all, the police have dash cams and obviously would have the license #, I don't see any reason why a person eluding couldn't be picked up at a later time. Many areas do have more stringent chase criteria and it hasn't increased the amount of attempted eluding.

Also, it does say that he was in satisfactory condition in the hospital. We don't know if he is at home now or went to jail, so I think people should quit assuming that he's "getting off easy" until we know FOR SURE otherwise.

One thing that really upsets me, is that he crashed up 11th street and my family (with little kids) lives up there. He's lucky this didn't happen during the day when they would be out in their driveway playing basketball or something. He could have hurt someone else other than himself and the girl. Hmmm, the son of a police detective, eh? Well, now his actions make perfect sense--at least in the brain of an 18 year old. As adults we would hopefully all make better choices, but probably not at age 18--especially given his circumstances. We were all young once, maybe some of us still are, but when I was 18 I did some pretty stupid things looking back and so did all my friends. The only difference was I didn't get caught. I remember eluding a state trooper who I knew was going to cite me for speeding and possibly reckless driving in broad daylight. I saw his brake lights come on as he was driving in the opposite direction just as I hit the crest of a hill traveling at oh about 110 m.p.h. I was driving alone and figured I had a few seconds jump on him before he could get back up to speed and so at the next turn-off (which was about five seconds away @ 110 m.p.h. from where he had first seen me) I hit the brakes and barely made the turn and then drove through an orchard and parked out of sight. I probably sat there with my heart in my throat for a good fifteen minutes which seemed like two hours before I ventured out and walked up to the highway to have a look-see. I guess my point is we were all young and stupid once upon a time. Can't y'all remember how much knowledge your parents gained between the ages--our ages, not theirs--of about 16 to about 21?

Teens and speed were made for each other. All those raging hormones and the illusion of immortality combine to make them feel invincible. It made me feel the same way. A few more years of age and experience before getting on a fast motorcycle is still the best solution because I guarantee you all the laws on the books will not prevent these young people from making these same poor choices over and over and over again. Next time it happens it could involve one of your own either directly or indirectly and, no, I'm not giving this young man a pass because he clearly broke the law, but I do understand why he did what he did and why the law did not keep him or his passenger safe.

Right on the money, mav. The only thing I would add is that while what he did was dead wrong and deserving of punishment, two felony counts is a bit much for a single action when you factor in the very real possibility of life in prison that would be required by a third felony.

Treat his injuries and then arrest him when he is discharged, he can go directly to jail and go through the process of hearings and bail just like everyone else would.

Anniebear your obviously not a parent......they had no idea they were pursuing a police officers son, so he was being treated no different than anyone else would have in that situation.

Why are you all assuming Madison (the passenger) is his girlfriend? I know for a fact she is not his girlfriend and would be upset over these assumptions.

Lets see if I have this right...

The police are bad if they chase criminals.

The police are bad if they don't chase criminals.

Police are at fault if someone is killed, and also when someone is not killed, as in this case.

Police should just use their super powerful video cameras to just get the motorcycle license plate number, then solely base a later arrest on that license plate number alone.

The police should just arrest people later at their home, because they can use their special super powers of x-ray vision to see the face of a person, in a helmet, driving a motorcycle traveling at 80-100 mph.

The police should arrest people in the hospital, even if they are still in surgery.

The "blue shirt thugs" have a war against "the people" and harass innocent youths to get an adrenaline rush.

Filing the felony charges of eluding, reckless endangerment and very likely, vehicular assault, is not adequate because a police officer's Son is involved and that's just not enough and he's getting special treatment.

If a police officer's Son is involved in a crime, both the Son and the Officer are automatically guilty, and should both just be put in jail immediately without trial because they are just plain bad and it's special treatment if that does not happen.

Did I miss anything?

Note to police officers: These people couldn't care less about you. Why do you continue to get up every day and risk your lives for them?

Its amazing to me, that the WW does not find it necessary to get a comment from this young mans father, the "great" detective and I loosely use the descriptive term great bahahaah. If it was the son of a bank president, or huge corporation every time a reference was made about this young man, the father and their position would be commented on as well. And wasnt he charged with 2 felonies? I am not finding it in the paper? can anyone direct me to what day the WW printed that? What is the darnells in bed with the WW (Wenatchee World)

I think teenagers do stupid things. we all know that. He is 18 and a legal adult stop blaming his parents for everything. Parents do what they can raising their kids until it is time for them to spread their wings and fly. Yes he made a mistake, but stop blaming his parents. Especially his dad, he has a huge part in finding the killer of Cowell.

I always love it when the guy has a helmet on and the girl doesn't, shows how much the guy cares about the girl. Then after he dumps the bike he runs without any concern for the girl. Clearly this guy is destined for great things. I wonder if the girl will be smart enough to recognize he's a LOSER or will just go back for more.

It's great when your Dad is a cop and can get you out of any jam. One of the benefits of small town living. Too bad equal application of the law doesn't apply in this case......
