EAST WENATCHEE — Bridgeport Mayor Steve Jenkins has a 2 percent lead in a tight race for Douglas County commissioner. Incumbent Mary Hunt trails by 160 votes. She received 49 percent of the vote, compared to Jenkins’ 51 percent.
Jenkins said he’s pleased but admitted that 2 percent isn’t much with 3,000 votes left to count.
“I’d like to be up there at 60 percent but that’s not going to happen today,” Jenkins said. “I feel good, no matter what happens. I met good people and good things happened along the way.”
Hunt did not return phone calls to her cell phone and home phone Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
The candidates were only 51 votes apart in the August primary. Hunt held the lead at 50.8 percent to Jenkins’ 49.2 percent.
“We thought it was going to be close, but I don’t know if I was hoping it would be this close,” Jenkins said.
One of the biggest challenges was name recognition, he said. Hunt was first elected to the office in 1998. She’s running for her fourth term.
“I don’t have much name familiarity in the East Wenatchee area,” he said. “In Douglas County, the incumbents are usually strong.”
Jenkins ran on a platform to entice more industry and development to Douglas County with its inexpensive power and infrastructure.
“Douglas County has so many positive things going for it,” he said. Looking back, he said he wouldn’t have done anything differently.
“We got the message out there and worked as hard as we could,” he said.
