RICHLAND — The Richland High volleyball team did something no one else in the Tri-Cities can claim.
The Bombers won the Crossover Tournament in Spokane this past weekend, ending years of Spokane school dominance.
Now, Richland has its sights set on a state championship.
Richland won three pool-play matches, sweeping Class 1A Cascade, Northwest Christian and Central Valley. The Bombers then swept Idaho’s St. Maries, Kennewick, and won in three against Vancouver Skyview and then defeated Class 3A No. 1 Mount Spokane 25-23, 31-29 to win the title.
The Bombers have three regular season matches left, including one at Wenatchee against the Panthers next Tuesday, before they will most likely host the district tournament.
“I think (the tournament victory) will be more motivation for us,” Richland senior Melanie Williamson said. “Since we won, let’s keep working hard and improving.”
The Bombers made state for the first time in 2009, losing both matches.
But this has been a different year, as Richland has consistently been ranked No. 1 in the state in the weekly polls.
