Helen E. Matthiesen
Thursday, October 14, 2010
Our beloved mother, grandma, great-grandma, great-great-grandma and friend went to be with our Lord on Saturday, October 9, 2010. Helen was born May 9, 1916, at Norfolk, NE to Louie and Mary Schenzel. Helen attended school in Norfolk through the eighth grade. She was the youngest of nine children. Helen married Henry Matthiesen on September 27, 1940, in California. They made their home at the homestead of August and Amelia Matthiesen, where they raised their children. Helen was a wonderful mother; she canned her own vegetables and meat. She was always ready to help anyone in need. She became well known for her wonderful baking abilities. She made cinnamon rolls, butterhorns and delicious pies and cookies. She also made clothes and baby blankets; she was a good seamstress. In 1960, Helen and Henry moved off the family farm and into Mansfield. They made their home where Norman and Marilyn Tupling live. Helen then rented rooms and boarded fisherman and school teachers. In 1966, Helen was employed by the Mansfield School as the Head Cook. After the death of her husband, Helen became a caregiver for children and the elderly. She took care of her grandkids and great-grandchildren as well. The last four years, due to declining health, Helen was homebound. She had great fun with her five cats, who were her companions.
Survivors are Red (Joyce) Matthiesen, Marilyn (Norman) Tupling, all of Mansfield, Sharon (Joe) Mongeon of Spokane and Geraldine Ofstead of Brewster; grandchildren, Henry, Julie (Scott), Patty, Tammy, Jacque (Larry), Danny, Alan, Oscar (Lisa), Eric (Sundae), Steve (Lori) and Gary; great-grandchildren, Cory, Jason, Norman (Tara), Sarah, Alyssa (Eric), Kayla, Tyler, Dale (Tessa), Alexandria, Katelynn, Cole, Shaylee, Jessica, Jedd, Thaddius, Blake, Morgan, Sydnee, Liberty, Ben and Megan; great-great-grandsons, Trevor, Joshua, Taten and Kodi; and numerous nieces and nephews, all whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her mother; father; husband; twin sons, Dale and Gale; and son, George.
Services will be held on Monday, October 18, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., at the Mansfield Community Church, with Pastor Tom Herringshaw officiating. Memorial gifts may be made to the Mansfield Dollars for Scholars, in memory of Helen Matthiesen. Please express your thoughts and memories on the online guest book at jonesjonesbetts.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Waterville Funeral Home.
