East Wenatchee City Hall offers a bit of hidden green
Wednesday, September 22, 2010
Once a week, Doug Simon with the East Wenatchee streets department mows this small, grassy area behind East Wenatchee City Hall. It’s the site of a former school playground and baseball field. The lot is maintained by the city and still has a baseball backstop. The grassy spot is is used occasionally by neighbors.
Doug Simon with East Wenatchee’s streets department, mows the former school playground and little league baseball field behind the East Wenatchee City Hall on Monday. The lot is still maintained by the city and still contains a baseball backstop and is used occasionally by neighbors.
EAST WENATCHEE — There’s a space of green behind City Hall. It’s a bit of a secret.
The little park, which isn’t really considered a park by the city, is leftover from a bygone era.
The expanse of green grass is the shape of a wobbly baseball diamond. It has a small, run-down backstop. It’s kind of like a neighborhood sandlot, minus the sand. Neighbors say the field is known by a handful of youth baseball coaches and used in the spring by small children to practice T-ball.
“We used to take these guys over there to play T-ball when they were little,” said Dwayne Jones, talking about his now-grown children. Jones lives on Colorado Street near the park where he and his wife, Candice, have lived for 23 years. Now that the kids are beyond T-ball years, it’s the family dogs that get use of the park.
They’re not the only ones. Enough dogs (and people) use the green space that a pair of signs have been put up with a gentle reminder that dog owners pick up after their dogs.
The city’s streets department maintains the lawn with a sprinkler system and regular mowing as it maintains other pieces of city property. “City Hall does a pretty good job keeping it up,” said Brandon Jones, Dwayne and Candice Jones’ son.
The field is a remnant from the days that it served the original East Wenatchee School, long before the construction of Eastmont High School across 9th Street which would eventually become Eastmont Junior High School, now occupied by Gold’s Gym and office space.
“Before that, the only school in East Wenatchee was that, where City Hall now stands,” said East Wenatchee Mayor Steve Lacy.
He noted that the field isn’t the only remnant of the school. Rock work on both sides of 9th Street, near City Hall, are leftover from then, too. The land where City Hall and the almost-forgotten ball field are located was bought some time in the 10 years before the construction of the current city building, Lacy said.
The lonely little field isn’t exactly easy to get to. Tiny Colorado Street doesn’t have any parking, but those willing to walk a little can park at City Hall.

I have fond memories of playing in that ball field. I grew up on that dead end Colorado street in the 70's. It was just a bumpy dirt road at that time. I went to the elementary school that was where city hall is now. There used to be a merry-go-round that you stood up inside with bars that hit you about midwaist on each side of you. I often wonder whatever happened to it. Thanks for the pictures. Didn't even know that ball field was still there.

Golly, I remember going to that school during my elementary days. Must have been in the early 50's. Then we had to walk to school.. up hill both ways. Watched many a football games at the fenced in area up the hill. Think that was Joe Earhart and Son in the olden days. What has happened to the area where the track was? All weeds ... too bad. Enjoyed the article and it started a remember when conversation here at home a couple blocks away.

They used to hold youth soccer games and practices there back in the day, too.
Susan - The area you are talking about (and yes, it looked much better once upon a time) was purchased by a church a few years ago (or so the sign reads on the chain-link fence)...it never seemed like a good location for a church but, rather, more suited to office/business/retail. At any rate, it will be interesting to see how it all evolves and unfolds.

I went to see it. I guess the view is better from up higher where the photographer took this shot from. I wish it were a pea-patch. Anyone know where a pea-patch/community garden could be put in- in E.Wenatchee?
