Andrew Howard Litt
Thursday, September 23, 2010
Andrew Howard Litt, 97, died Saturday, September 18, 2010, at his home in East Wenatchee, WA. Andy was born on the family farm in Krupp, WA on April 21, 1913, shortly after the family had emigrated from Germany. He attended school at a country schoolhouse south of Hartline, WA. As a young man, he worked for farmers around the area and went to Fresno, CA during the winters to work with his uncle in the wineries. He also worked on the construction of Grand Coulee Dam. While on a trip to White Bluffs, WA to purchase a cow for a friend, he was injured by a beam on the Wahluke Ferry. During his recovery, he met the love of his life, Clara Hinderer. They were married in White Bluffs on March 22, 1943. They then moved to Almira, WA, where they made their home for 32 years. In 1944, Andy started his long and illustrious career with Husky Oil Company. Everyone knew they could call for that big orange truck at any time, day or night. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. In August of that year, their daughter, Cheryl, was born. Another daughter, Carol, was born in August of 1945. Son, Jerry, was born in December of 1949. During his years in Almira, he was an active community member. He was a school bus driver, volunteer fireman, school board director, 4-H leader and staunch supporter of community activities. He was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church and held the office of Church Treasurer at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Almira. He was currently a member of Celebration Lutheran Church in East Wenatchee. He had a passion for hunting, fishing and gardening, the love of which he passed on to his children and grandchildren. He also loved the games of horseshoes and bowling, sponsoring both ladies and young men's bowling teams. He absolutely adored children. Even in his weakened state, that huge smile would appear every time he saw them. After retirement, Andy and Clara lived in Hartline, Coulee City and East Wenatchee. After moving to East Wenatchee, and not being willing to completely retire, Andy helped a friend in his orchard in Rock Island.
Andy is survived by his wife of 67 years, Clara; children, Cheryl (Rob) Salter of East Wenatchee, WA, Carol (Doug) Coleman of Richland, WA and Jerry (Donna) Litt of East Wenatchee, WA; his grandchildren, Brion (Paula) Salter of East Wenatchee, WA, Kevin (Joanne) Salter of Snohomish, WA, Todd (Sheridan) Coleman of Vancouver, WA, Scott (Lori) Coleman of Richland, WA, Jenifer (Mark) Hollenbeck of Richland, WA, Jason (Ann) Litt of Renton, WA and Casey Litt of East Wenatchee, WA; and great-grandchildren, Shannon and Molly Salter, Ella and Grace Salter, Cheyenne, Shaylee and Kayden Coleman, Haley and Jack Coleman, Hannah Hollenbeck and Eli Litt. He is also survived by his sister, Molly Jess of Moses Lake, WA; and sister-in-law, Helen Litt of Fresno, CA; numerous nieces and nephews; and his many 'adopted' grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Andy was preceded in death by siblings, Mary (Litt) Cline, Anne (Litt) Scheibner, Emma (Litt) Gramprie, Jack Litt, Pete Litt and Fred Litt.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 25, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Celebration Lutheran Church in East Wenatchee, WA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Celebration Lutheran Church Building Fund.
