EPHRATA — The Ephrata boys basketball team’s bid for its first win of the season in its last game of the year fell inches short on Friday.
Zach Allen’s three-quarters-court shot hit the rim and bounced away at the final buzzer, giving Othello a 59-57 victory over the Tigers. Ephrata finished the season with an 0-20 record a year after advancing to the Class 2A state tournament.
“The kids learned a lot as the season went on, and I learned a lot,” said Ephrata coach Brandon Evenson. “The kids got better every game. We just didn’t have enough games to get all the way better.”
Ephrata had a 20-13 lead after the first quarter and at one point stretched its lead out to nine, but Othello outscored the Tigers 23-15 in the fourth quarter. Ephrata freshman Dylan Benthem (25 points) hit one of his seven 3-pointers with six seconds remaining to cut Othello’s lead to one point. After a foul, Othello’s David Garza hit one of two free throws, and Allen’s last-ditch attempt missed the mark.
“It was a tight game all the way,” Evenson said. “They just reeled us in in the fourth quarter. We battled real hard.”
Ephrata’s Brad Christensen added 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The difference: The Jacks couldn’t come up with enough stops at the end of the game, and were eliminated from postseason contention with the loss and Toppenish’s win over Prosser.
