COULEE DAM — When it comes to the Lake Roosevelt Raiders, the second time was the charm for the Chelan Goats.
A month after the Raiders beat the Goats on their home floor, Chelan returned the favor Saturday night, beating Lake Roosevelt 60-51 in a non-league clash between a pair of league leaders.
Chelan, the top team in the Caribou Trail League, benefitted from three players with at least 15 points — Aaron McQuaid (17 points), Matt Robinson (16), and Michael Amsel, Jr. (15).
The Raiders, undefeated in Central Washington North Division play, had typically strong performance from post Ty Egbert (26 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks), but none of his teammates scored more than eight.
“We had lots of turnovers, which turned into them getting points in transition,” said Lake Roosevelt coach Brad Wilson. “That was something we knew we couldn’t afford. They’re good enough without getting numbers on you.”
The Raiders also had trouble after point guard Brandon Kohler left the game with a cut under his eye.
“We had some weird lineups out there. We just didn’t adjust properly, didn’t get ourselves in the right spots,” Wilson said.
To the wire
A number of Saturday night’s contests went down to the last minute.
Cashmere swept its season series with the Okanogan boys, winning the battle of the Bulldogs 61-59 after Mitchell Darlington and Trenton Johnson each canned a pair of free throws down the stretch.
Quincy knocked off Ellensburg 55-53, as the Bulldogs’ tip-in off a missed last-second shot occurred after the final buzzer.
And in Waterville, the Soap Lake boys escaped with a 55-54 victory thanks to Anthony King’s layup with three second remaining.
Okanogan’s 65-40 win over Cashmere locked up the Caribou Trail League girls title for coach Gary Smith’s team. The Bulldogs pulled off the win without Meka Townsend, one of their players, who will be out for an unspecified amount of time due to surgery.
