He apprenticed with his grandfather, Richard Blakely, as a Brick Mason. He worked on many brick buildings in Butte and in other parts of Montana and around the Seattle and Wenatchee areas. He was a Journeyman Bricklayer for over 50 years. In 1950, he met his sweetheart, Mary Murlene Nash. They dated for two years and were married for Time and Eternity in the LDS Idaho Falls Temple on May 29, 1952. Richard worked construction as they started their family and they often moved to find work. Their children, Terry and Richard Jr., were born in Butte. Luci and Peggy were born in Great Falls. Kathy, Tracy and Michael were born in Seattle. In 1970, he was hired by Alcoa and he moved his family to Malaga, WA. He worked at Alcoa for 23 years, before retiring for medical reasons. He was a man of great faith and was an example of honesty and integrity for his family. During his life, he also served in the Army Reserves and as a volunteer Firefighter for the Malaga Fire Department.
