If you drink wine you have your favorites. And almost certainly some of your favorites are made right here in North Central Washington.
The wine industry in our region continues to grow, with more than 60 wineries now in Chelan, Douglas, Grant and Okanogan counties. The quality of the wines here is outstanding.
Not only are those wineries making a quality product, they’re helping to build on our tourism economy with their tasting rooms.
But which wineries make the best wines? That’s up to individual taste. Or at least it has been.
This summer, Foothills magazine, a bimonthly glossy lifestyle magazine produced by World Publishing, will be putting our wines to the expert taste test.
Working with Wine Press Northwest, a highly respected wine magazine, Foothills will present the North Central Washington Wine Awards. Wine Press, with extensive experience in these delicate matters, will be arranging for outside sommeliers to come and pass judgment on our wines.
With so many great wines here, the competition should be interesting. The larger wineries likely are familiar with the judging process. Many have entered other competitions and come home with medals. Others wineries haven’t reached that stage yet.
Now they all will have a chance to see where they stand when competing against each other. After the judging will be an event to hand out the medals, then the magazine will feature the winners in its August edition. Foothills also will be distributed to a wide wine-drinking audience outside our region.
The prestige and wide exposure these awards will bring our wineries is well deserved.
Foothills has been soliciting partnerships to help put on this event. Already, the Port of Chelan County, Port of Douglas County, Wenatchee Valley Visitors Bureau and Cascade Foothills Farmland Association have signed on.
It is a chance to recognize and celebrate one of our great burgeoning industries. And that’s something to get excited about.
