WENATCHEE — Wenatchee Valley College has announced four individuals and one team to be inducted into its Hall of Fame during a ceremony on June 4.
Former men’s basketball great Dwight Pflugrath, women’s basketball coach Steve Stamps, track standout Jennifer Lemke, community booster Don Schoening, and the 1956 WVC football team will all be honored at the event, which will be held at Van Tassell Center on the WVC campus.
Peshastin-Dryden High School alum Pflugrath averaged 12.9 points per game in 1975-76 and 14.9 points per game in 1976-77 for the Knights. He later played at Whitworth, coached at Mansfield and Ritzville, and is now the boys basketball coach and athletic director at Brewster High. He is also a member of the WIAA Coaches Hall of Fame.
“I thought my friends were playing a joke on me,” Pflugrath said of his induction. “It’s quite an honor. It’s a surprise.”
Pflugrath said he was set to attend Central Washington University in 1975, but was talked into attending WVC just a week before school by Bill Pandiani, who was starting his first season as the WVC men’s basketball coach.
“It sounded like a lot of fun to be part of a new program,” Pflugrath said. “A lot of people thought I was nuts, but it was probably one of better decisions I made in my life to go to Wenatchee. It gave me time to figure out what I wanted to do in my life.”
Pflugrath will go into the Hall with Schoening, a Dryden resident who served as the school’s athletic director from 1970-80. During his tenure he started the men’s and women’s basketball programs, re-started the men’s and women’s track teams, and initiated the softball team.
Chelan native Stamps had a 149-77 record and took the Knights to five NWAACC Tournaments from 1983-91.
Lemke, who later starred at Arizona State University, broke the WVC shot put record five times as a freshman, and set a national record of 48 feet, 6 1/2 inches as a sophomore in 1981.
The 1956 football team, coached by Tom Perry, posted a 6-1 league record to win the Washington State Junior College Athletic Conference title.
The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. on June 4 with a social hour, followed by a dinner and inductions at 6 p.m.
Tickets are $40, with all proceeds benefitting WVC athletics. Contact the WVC Athletic Department at 682-6886 by May 27 for reservations.
