Last-second agony
Davis' late FG keeps Wenatchee out of postseason
Tuesday, November 1, 2011
Wenatchee High School football players react in the last seconds of the game to a Davis field goal that hit the cross bar and bounced through — the only score in a mini playoff game in Moses Lake Tuesday night.
MOSES LAKE — The Wenatchee football team’s season, for all intents and purposes, ended Tuesday with a clank.
After keeping the Davis Pirates’ high-octane offense off the scoreboard for 15 minutes and 48 seconds off their abridged district tiebreaker game at Moses Lake’s Lions Field, the Panthers watched Davis’ Daniel Guzman kick a 29-yard field goal that caromed hard off the right upright and in, giving Davis a 3-0 victory.
After Davis’ 21-20 overtime victory over Richland in the second tiebreaker game Tuesday, the Panthers drop to the No. 5 seed out of the Big Nine 4A division.
Since Richland defeated Wenatchee during the regular season, the Bombers get the No. 4 seed and will host Gonzaga Prep on Friday.
Wenatchee will host Lewis & Clark, the No. 4 seed out of the Greater Spokane League at the Apple Bowl on Friday night, but there will be nothing riding on the outcome except pride.
“Things happen for a reason,” Wenatchee senior safety Chris Woodard said after the game. “We have our last game next week, and we’re going to play those last 48 minutes as hard as we can.”
Wenatchee couldn’t put any points on the board in the two eight-minute halves, even with the two turnovers forced by its defense.
Both of the Pirates’ miscues gave Wenatchee possession inside Davis territory, but the Panthers were unable to even get into range for a field goal on either occasion.
The second Davis turnover, a fumble by Austin Wagner that was recovered by Wenatchee safety Austin Burnett on the Pirate 48 yard-line, gave the Panthers a golden opportunity to send Davis home.
After Isaiah Brandt-Sims rambled 18 yards to the Davis 34 yard-line on first down, the Panthers lost four yards on their next three plays and turned the ball over on downs.
Wenatchee coach Scott Devereaux said after the game that if he had it to do again, he would have punted on fourth-and-15 with 2:21 to go.
“Some of routes we got on that last play weren’t what we wanted,” he said of the play that resulted in a 4-yard completion from Dillon Sugg to Kyle Keeler.
On the ensuing Davis possession, Wagner busted up the middle for six yards, and the Pirates followed with a trademark big play.
Although Woodard had tight coverage on wideout Carlos Perea-Vijarro, Davis quarterback Deion Wright lofted a 45-yard teardrop off Woodard’s outstretched hands.
“I got as deep as possible and jumped as high as I could,” Woodard said. “I got my fingertips to it, but it was a good play by the receiver.”
Davis ran the ball three times to center the ball for Guzman, who kicked four field goals during the regular season.
Guzman appeared to push the 29-yarder to the right, but it stayed true enough to slam flush against the upright.
Instead of bouncing out toward the field, the ball sank straight down beyond the crossbar.
“I saw it go over my head and it looked wide,” said Woodard, who has kicked for Wenatchee this season.
Wenatchee’s deepest foray into Davis territory came on its first drive of the second half, keyed by a 41-yard run by Brandt-Sims on a counter play off a faked fly sweep to Blake Aguilar.
The Panthers turned the ball over on downs there as well, as Brandt-Sims only came up with one yard on a fourth-and-two.
“One of our Achilles’ heels this season has been the fact that when we get in first or second-and-long, we rarely come up with a first down,” Devereaux said. “That got us again tonight.”
Wenatchee threw the ball three times for a total of two yards against Davis.
