MAZAMA — A 28-year-old Oregon man who fell while climbing Liberty Bell Mountain west of Mazama on Friday was airlifted from the mountain with injuries.
Michael Kittel, of Tillamook, had been climbing with his wife when he fell at about 4:30 p.m., suffering injuries to his head, arms and ribs, said Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers.
Other climbers in the area located the injured climber and some left to call for assistance while others remained at the scene to provide medical help, he said.
A Whidbey Island Naval Base helicopter responded, and with the help of the Sheriff’s Office, Aero Methow Rescue and other climbers, were able to get the man into the helicopter that hovered over the cliff. He was transported to the Three Rivers Hospital in Brewster.
Rogers did not know the climber’s name or his condition this morning.
