Minor earthquake felt in Entiat

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

ENTIAT — “Entiat needs something to wake it up once in a while,” says Alan Moen, a 13-year Entiat resident. How about a 3.1 magnitude earthquake?

It rumbled at 4:59 p.m. Tuesday, four miles northwest of Entiat, according to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network. It was felt outside of Entiat at Sun Cove, Baker Flats, Orondo and Sunnyslope in the Wenatchee area, according to comments on The World’s website and Facebook page.

Moen was at the Entiat Public Library during the earthquake, with librarian Esther Dalgas.

“It felt like a dynamite blast,” Moen says. “We felt the impact, but there was no consequences or damage.”

There was only one aftershock for Moen and Dalgas — a strong desire to take books off the shelves, and read about earthquakes.

Entiat has quite a history of these quick quakes. Over the last 12 years, there have been eight earthquakes within 10 miles of the town. They have had magnitudes ranging from 2.6 to 3.5.

“Entiat boomers is what we called them in the sixties and seventies,” says Joyce Blaine, a former resident and graduate from Entiat High School. And the boomers are back. In fact, they never left.

"Mysterious 1872 quake yields clues for future By Alison Bickerstaff Seattle Times staff reporter The mighty Columbia River ran dry. Indians near Entiat feared the wrath of subterranean bulls. Women singing "Joy to the World" at an Olympia church thought "the Lord has come." It was the earthquake of 1872, the largest crustal earthquake in Washington state's history."
