WENATCHEE — If the Wenatchee AppleSox are to win their fifth West Coast League championship, they’ll do it at home — and soon.
With a 1-0 lead over the Corvallis Knights in the best-of-three WCL Championship Series, the AppleSox can clinch the title with a win in tonight’s 7:05 p.m. game at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium. And if the Knights end up prevailing tonight, Wenatchee will have one more shot at the same time and same place Saturday in a winner-take-all Game 3.
The AppleSox, who won Game 1 in Corvallis Thursday 9-8 despite blowing an early five-run lead, will send future UCLA right-hander James Kaprielian to the mound tonight. Kaprielian allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out seven in five shutout innings in his last start, a no-decision in the Sox’ 1-0 loss against the Bellingham Bells in Game 1 of the WCL East Division Playoffs last Saturday.
The Knights will counter with UC-Santa Barbara lefty Greg Mahle, who pitched a no-hitter on Aug. 3 against the Cowlitz Black Bears in his only start of the season.
