LEAVENWORTH — Dave Winters is out to turn the Leavenworth oom-pa into a blues riff Sept. 15. The event organizer booked a huge lineup for the Leavenworth Blues Festival’s first year. Duffy Bishop, Ty Curtis, Big Mumbo, Doctor Funk and Slack Daddy will rock the Festhalle starting at noon.
Outside, three barbecue pits will serve finger-licking eats. A beer garden, cigar bar and vendors will also set up shop at the one-day event. The $25 ticket allows re-entry to the Festhalle.
For years, Winters managed events at the Festhalle. When the venue dropped Leavenworth Crush this year, Winters saw an opportunity. He teamed up with George Lak, Smallwood’s Harvest and United Way to create a new festival. With the loss of the Ritzville Blues Festival after 18 years, Winters is hoping to attract at least 500 people jonesing for blues.
“We’re just trying to build a name and some excitement,” he said. “From what I hear, there is a market for it.”
