The Chelan County Assessor’s Office and the Washington State Department of Revenue are warning senior citizens of a telemarketing scam offering property tax relief programs.
The department has recently received several calls from senior citizens who have been contacted by telephone marketers offering reverse mortgages, said Deann Walter, Chelan County Assessor. The callers identify themselves as agents of a company called Seniors First.
The callers ask for personal information such as employment status, income and age under the guise of helping the seniors qualify for property tax relief programs or aid assistance for veterans.
Walter said the callers are not acting on the state nor the county’s behalf and are offering false information. Residents are advised never to give out personal information over the phone unless they are sure they are talking to the correct office and have initiated the call.
Residents who have received such calls should call the assessor’s office at 667-6365 so the information can be forwarded to the Attorney General’s fraud division.
