TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Tacoma’s police chief says an officer who felt threatened by an armed man fatally shot the man.
Chief Don Ramsdell said the man had reportedly been involved Friday in a domestic violence incident elsewhere in the city but ended up at a home in the Hilltop neighborhood.
Ramsdell says the unidentified officer fired two rounds.
KOMO-TV reports that police say the man who died was on active military duty.
The chief told The News Tribune that investigators found a .45-caliber handgun near the dead man’s body. It was not clear whether the man pointed the gun at the officer, who is now on leave.
The dead man, in his 20s, was not immediately identified.
