Rat-bite fever confirmed in central Washington

WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) — Rat-bite fever has been confirmed in a few residents of Chelan and Douglas counties in central Washington.

The Wenatchee World reports (http://is.gd/9KHyaa ) the Chelan-Douglas Health District issued a news release about the disease Friday. The district also says a Grant County resident may have been exposed.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Rat-bite fever is an bacterial disease caused by infected rodents or consumption of contaminated food or water.

Symptoms include fever, headache and nausea. Some people develop a rash on their hands and feet. The illness is treated with antibiotics.
