Updated 11 a.m. Sunday:

LEAVENWORTH -- Highway 2 remains closed in both directions due to danger from falling trees from just west of Leavenworth to just east of the Stevens Pass summit. The ski area is open from the west.

Trooper Darren Wright, State Patrol spokesman, said this morning that crews are assessing the danger but have no estimate of when the route will reopen. By late Saturday at least eight snow-and-ice-laden trees had fallen on or along the route, officials said.

Troopers closed the highway at just before 6 p.m. Saturday after a falling tree crushed a westbound vehicle, seriously injuring two of its five Seattle occupants.

Aunradhika Anuradhika, 30, was treated and released from Central Washington Hospital. Simran Rattan, 16, was reported in stable condition there this morning. Both were passengers in the westbound 2005 Audi A6 that was partially crushed by the falling tree.

The vehicle’s driver, Binay Kumar Pathak, 37, and other passengers Charanjot Ratton, 13; Pootnam Ratton, 25; were transported to Cascade Medical Center, but were not admitted, a hospital official said this morning.

The incident happened 22 miles west of Leavenworth, within a mile of where another falling tree crushed an eastbound vehicle the day before, killing two of its occupants and injuring four.

One of the survivors wasn’t seriously injured. The other three, Jamie Owen Mayer and her husband Steven Mayer remained in serious condition this morning at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Jessica Janine Owen was transferred to Harborview after undergoing surgery at Central Washington Hospital. Her condition is also serious.

Approximately 15 automobile accidents, most attributed to slippery road conditions, were reported in Chelan and Douglas counties from just after midnight Friday to 5 a.m. this Sunday. They included:

Saturday, 8:30 p.m.

Chevy pickup carrying five people southbound on Highway 97 left the roadway 10 miles north of Chelan and hit an embankment. Two were transported to Chelan Community Hospital, but not admitted. The vehicle was traveling too fast for the road conditions, according to a State Patrol news release.

Friday, 7:55 a.m.

A Chevy Trailblazer carrying five people westbound on Highway 28, six miles east of East Wenatchee left the roadway, headed down an embankment and struck some rocks. Two were treated and released from Central Washington Hospital. The vehicle was traveling too fast for conditions, according to a State Patrol news release.

LEAVENWORTH — The State Patrol has closed Highway 2 in both directions between Leavenworth and the Stevens Pass summit after eight trees fell on or along the roadway.

Trooper Darren Wright, State Patrol spokesman, said the route will remain closed for safety until conditions improve. Detours are over Snoqualmie and Blewett passes, he said.

Tall evergreens toppling under the weight of ice and snow have crushed two vehicles, killed two people, downed power lines and threatened the scores of utility workers who have been trying for the past week to get the lights back on for more than 3,800 people in the area.

A serious injury accident involving a tree on Highway 2 was reported around 6 p.m. this evening. More details to come.

Conditions pose a heightened threat as increased numbers of tourists and vacation home owners enter the region for Christmas break.

I drove through at about 4:30 pm Sat. night. I saw a lot of leaning trees. I'm not surprised WSP closed it.
