Safety Valve: Letters from readers

Smooth riding

Congratulations to the city of Wenatchee and Wenatchee Valley College in their partnership to develop and implement a plan to improve Fifth Street. This joint venture improves traffic flow, contributes to the beautification of this important arterial and, most importantly, substantially increases safety for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Local contractor Project Groundwork showed great ability to engage the community by setting up a series of open meetings at the college to hear ideas from interested people. They pulled together those ideas into a cost-effective plan, then provided the necessary oversight to complete the construction on time. This is a great example of the type of partnerships that add to a livable community. Well done!

It would be better if there wasn't a big hump in the east bound lane just in front of the college-owned apartments.

I'm not so sure trying to make things look better works for auto's. Parking lots like the one on fifth street and mission are horrid to try to navigate. Get rid of the stupid planters so we can move! Same with fifth street. Anytime I have to look through a tree to try to see oncoming traffic (Banner bank and mission) pisses me off. City codes be damned, common sense needs to prevail where safety is concerned.

I am sure the college likes this so more students will have to buy parking permits. Those trees in the median are only going to grow taller and be and obstacle in the future. No parking on Fifth means people who live there or who have agencies there are stuck. It probably would have been okay, with no trees and parking past WVC gym.

this letter fails to mention all of the blind turning lanes due to the wonderful vegetation now growing in the middle of the road or how much this new greenery will cost to maintain and keep trimmed down..
