Burning

I, like many people in this valley, have been watching with great interest as the Town Toyota Center drama folds and unfolds, almost on a daily basis. There are pros and cons as to how someone should address the issues at hand. Do we tax the people or not? Do we throw in the towel at the end of the day? Do we trust what anyone says, as many who confront this issue seem to not be on the same page?

I think most of us would grudgingly pay the taxes, hesitantly listen to our leaders, and cringe at believing that there is a solution. But setting all those things aside, accountability for the initial idea in the first place lies in the spoken “fact” that many didn’t want this built to begin with and we were not listened to. Even so, those in high places went and had it built under false pretenses as a covering of wool over the public’s eyes. I believe that is what perturbs us most and the anger created forces us to not bargain with those who will not fess up to their mistakes. Those of us who feel this way wish not to consider themselves as part of the problem or be included in part of the solution for that very reason. It is not right for Town Toyota Center to be everyone’s problem or everyone’s solution. To hang on is to get burned; to let go is to heal. I would support healing over getting burned any day.

Let us not forget there was a lot of opposition to the building of the TTC in the first place. That being noted they chose to go ahead and build it. The truth is the PFD shouldn't be the only ones villainized here, because they are not the only ones to blame, after all- the PFD didn't have the money to pay for it. The banks and bondholders should've thought of the consequence before investing on such a risky venture, or "putting their life savings" into it. So no one wanted it built, they built it anyway, now they want a bailout? If we bail them out that would only encourage, and enable such behaviour in the future. If there is to be an tax increase let it be up to the voters of these fine districts to voice their opinions. Most see through the smokescreen of fear propaganda, and "shame on you if you don't bail us out" tactic. If our elected leaders wouldn't have waited untill the last minute to try and fix such a HUGE problem, we wouldn't be in such a tight spot. All I learned from this whole thing is our local officials were truly incompetent on every decision regarding the TTC, from its construction on, and to bail them out would only enable such conduct in the future. Bad decisions are easy to make when it is not your money your spending, and no one is held accountable if it goes bad. Time to send a message, no more risky spending/ lending.

I think you might have misunderstood my message, which was, if we give in, and bail them out... whats to say it wont happen again? What ever happened to choice and consequence? No one will be held accountable, and that is wrong.

I think voting them out was all we could do to hold them responsible. It's our puppy now, what are we going to do with it? Euthanize it, or keep it alive and make it useful. I say we find the dog a new owner who can take care of it!

It's sort of like the kids bringing home a puppy. You hear "Oh, it won't be a problem; you won't even know it's here." A month later when you are shoveling poop in the back yard, the by-product of that expensive dog food it had to have, you hate that mutt, but it's your baby now!

Here is my solution (again): FOR SALE: One slightly used arena. Owners must sell for financial reasons. Make offer - Take over payments. Buy now and we'll throw in one defunct PFD AND a set of Ginsu Knives!
