SANDPOINT, Idaho — Mission Ridge’s Alec Jones put together a blistering second run to win Sunday’s giant slalom on the final day of the Northwest Cup stop at Schweitzer Mountain Resort.
Jones’ combined time for his two runs was 2:10.43, including a 1:04.99 second run that vaulted him into first place over Kenny Wilson, 17, of Squaw Valley, Idaho, and Russell Ronsky, 16, of Canada.
With his victory in the FIS event, Jones, 17, capped a strong Northwest Cup at Schweitzer. He also had second- and third-place finishes in super-G races.
His teammate, Carl Noges, who won both of the two super-G races on Thursday and Friday, took fourth place Sunday in the giant slalom.
Noges’ time was 2:11.70.
Mission Ridge’s Austin Dean (11th), Cai Yamamoto (12th), Travis Ahmann (14th), Kristoff Fowler (15th) and Danny O’Neal (16th) also fared well Sunday.
Other giant slalom results for MRST athletes: Josh Sanborn (24th), Max Tobler (30th), Ben Holmberg (39th), Frederick Williams (50th) and Jacob DeRuwe (63rd).
Meanwhile, on the women’s side, Mission Ridge’s Kyla Miller completed a strong Northwest Cup series at Schweitzer by finishing in fifth place in Sunday’s super-G. Miller, 15, took third in Saturday’s super-G and had a pair of fifth-place showings the previous two days in the giant slalom.
Miller’s time of 1:19.21 was about a second slower than that of Paige Minana (Schweitzer), 19, who won the event in a time of 1:18.11.
Other MRST athletes in Sunday’s super-G: Lindsay Ahmann (16th), Hannah Bodily (21st), Brittney Knox (44th), Taylor Bauernfeind (47th), Mattie Wise (51st), Katherine Robinson (58th) and Caroline Taylor (70th).
The Northwest Cup resumes Feb. 10-12 at Mount Hood Meadows, before it heads to Mount Bachelor from Feb. 21-26.
The Northwest Cup Finals will be held at Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort from March 30-April 1.
