KNAPP’S HILL GRADE: In the late 1920s, this sign at the top of Knapp’s Hill grade, between Entiat and Chelan, warned motorists what to expect before they arrived at the bottom. The grade at the time was 15 to 20 percent. The original road was built in 1897 and replaced in 1936 by a 3.1-mile gradual highway and tunnel.

100 years ago — 1912

• C.E. Dimmitt of Walla Walla has been here for several days negotiating for the opening of a department store in a room in the Elman Hotel block formerly occupied by the Groves-Nancekivell Co. If a deal is reached, the Wenatchee store would be one of a chain of several stores. Dimmitt has retained W.O. Parr as his attorney here.

• Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Soderling held a card party at their North Wenatchee Avenue home last night. Guests included W.W. Gray, F.U. Bliss and W.S. Trimble.

• A.A. Stevens is the new commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. Other officers are F.A. Rogers, senior vice commander; O.V. Wallace, junior vice commander; M.O. Merrill, quartermaster; J.W. Ferguson, officer of the day; and LaFayette Pettibone, chaplain.

50 years ago — 1962

• Deposits and loans showed an upswing during the year at Cashmere Valley Bank. Year-end figures presented at the annual stockholders meeting showed deposits of about $4.2 million, an increase of more than $400,000. Loans total about $1.3 million. Directors of the bank also approved an increase from 3 percent to 3.5 percent on savings account interest, and promoted Ron Trimble to the position of assistant vice president. Trimble joined the bank in 1959. Hy W. Rieke has been president and E.J. Uecker has been chairman of the board since the bank was organized.

• Louis Vosters and John Corrigan have sold the Wenatchee distributorship for Skookum Milk to Don Jones, Jerry Reister and Hank Ball.

25 years ago — 1987

• Haggen Inc., owners of the TOP Foods store in East Wenatchee, has plans to build a new store here with more than twice the retail space of the current operation. Construction is planned this year on a site at the intersection of Grant Road and the Quincy Highway.

• Car dealer Don Reichert and Tom Barros are the new owners of the Toyota dealership in Wenatchee. Reichert, who owns Reichert Nissan, and Barros, the Nissan dealership general manager, have named the new dealership Town Toyota. It is at 606 N. Wenatchee Ave., the former City Center Motors.
