Golf: Whalen 7 back at SPC

SAMMAMMISH — Ephrata’s Andrew Whalen shot a 74 on Wednesday at the first round of the Sahalee Players Championship at Sahalee Country Club.
Whalen was seven strokes behind Tain Lee of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., who fired a 67 to take a one-stroke lead over Moscow, Idaho’s Chris Williams, the tournament’s defending champion and senior-to-be at the University of Washington.
The tournament features 63 amateur golfers from around the world, and is being contested over 72 holes of stroke play. The field was scheduled to play 36 holes Thursday, and the final round will be held today.
