Shooting: EHS junior wins gold

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — An Eastmont High School junior skeet shooter earned a gold medal last week in a training camp for Olympics-aspiring firearms competitors.

Alex Nelson, 17, of East Wenatchee earned a gold medal for shooting down 44 out of 50 clay targets hurled to a 66-meter distance at the Scholastic Clay Target Program’s Junior Olympic Development Camp, held Memorial Day weekend in Colorado Springs, Colo. The silver and bronze went to the next highest scores of 43 and 42. Nelson fired with an over-under 12 gauge shotgun.

SCTP is the junior program of USA Shooting, designed for high-school-age trap and skeet shooters. The invitational camp hosted SCTP’s 22 best-ranked from across the country, to familiarize them with the international styles of shooting seen in the Olympics. Coaches at the camp included skeet champion Frank Thompson, a 2012 U.S. Olympic team member.
