MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN, Calif. — The week-long U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association J2 National Championships began here Monday with downhill training runs for both men and women.
Mission Ridge Ski Team’s Kyla Miller posted the eighth fastest women’s time on the day, while teammate Danny O’Neal had the 30th fastest time among the men.
Miller and O’Neal are among seven athletes chosen by the Pacific Northwest Ski Association for the Western Region J2 team (15- and 16-year-olds) at the national championships.
A day of downhill training is slated for Tuesday before the downhill race is officially held on Wednesday. Super-G is scheduled for Thursday, followed by giant slalom races on Friday and Saturday. The series concludes next Monday with the slalom.
Also, beginning Tuesday, the J1/J2 Western Region Jr. Championships will be held at Schweitzer in Idaho. The series will include two slalom races, two super-G races and two giant slalom races for both men and women (ages 15 to 20).
According to the Pacific Northwest Ski Association website, Mission Ridge athletes confirmed for Schweitzer include: (women) Katherine Robinson, Brittney Knox, Lindsay Ahmann, Clare Wise, Mattie Wise, Taylor Bauernfeind, Hannah Bodily and Haley Hanseler; and (men) Kristoff Fowler, Austin Dean, Alec Jones, Miles Sweek, Cai Yamamoto, Max Tobler, Josh Sanborn, Ben Holmberg, Travis Ahmann, Gage Managhan and Jacob DeRuwe.
