SANDPOINT, Idaho — Two Mission Ridge Ski Team members reached the podium Wednesday on the second day of the week-long Western Region Junior Championships at Schweitzer Mountain.
Haley Hanseler placed second and teammate Clare Wise third in the women’s giant slalom. Hanseler had the top time after the event’s first run, but saw French of Park City, Utah, beat her by more than a second to pull out the victory. French finished in two minutes, 10.42 seconds, with Hanseler came in 2:10.77. Wise clocked 2:10.98.
Two other MRST athletes, Lindsay Ahmann and Hannah Bodily, placed 28th and 32nd, respectively in the giant slalom. They were the fourth- and eighth-fastest J2 skiers in the race.
The Western Region Junior Championships attract both J1 (17- to 20-year-olds) and J2 (15- and 16-year-olds) skiers.
On the men’s side, Mission Ridge’s Carl Noges didn’t win the super-G race as he did the day before. But he led seven Ridge athletes who finished in the top 25 with a fifth-place tally.
Noges’ time of 1:12.10 was less than a second off the winning time (1:11.32) posted by Bronson Wright of Jackson Hole, Wyo. Noges was followed by MRST teammates Cai Yamamoto (6th place), Alec Jones (8th), Austin Dean (11th), Miles Sweek (12th), Kristoff Fowler (19th), and Max Tobler (25th).
Tobler was the second-fastest J2 racer on the day.
Meanwhile, at the J2 National Championships at Mammoth Mountain, Calif., neither Mission Ridge skier finished Wednesday’s races.
Kyla Miller was 31st after her first run in the slalom, but failed to finish her second try. The same goes for teammate Danny O’Neal, who was 52nd after his first run but didn’t complete his second in the men’s slalom.
