LEAVENWORTH — Short traffic delays may result on Highway 2 near Leavenworth Tuesday and Wednesday as crews work to install a railroad-style “drop-arm” gate near the junction with Icicle Road.
State Department of Transportation spokesman Jeff Adamson said the State Patrol will lower the gate when landslides or other conditions close the road to motorists. The project cost is about $33,000.
A companion gate at the west end of Tumwater Canyon will be part of a new bridge, now under construction, that will replace the old steel “green bridge” on Highway 2, he said.
That bridge should be finished next fall. The gates are expected to save money, DOT officials say, becuase state troopers will no longer need to be present at road blocks while the route is closed.
