Art on the Avenues to honor Wenatchee School District
Monday, October 22, 2012
Abraham Lincoln Elementary fifth graders (from left) Iris Espinoza, Brayden Montgomery, Erica Arroyo and Dulton Scott, last year teamed up to make a temporary sculpture from natural materials for the Art on the Avenues Beauty of Bronze program.
WENATCHEE — Art on the Avenues has named the Wenatchee School District as this year’s recipient of the Adele Wolford Founder’s Award in recognition of the district’s many creative student art, music and drama programs.
District Superintendent Brian Flones will accept the award at a Nov. 5 luncheon at the Wenatchee Golf and County Club, the nonprofit said in a news release.
Each year Art on the Avenues honors a local individual or organization that has supported the arts in a significant way.
The group has worked with the school district to create a program called “Beauty in Bronze.” All fifth-graders observe and learn about art and then create their own, small bronze sculptures to keep.
Art on the Avenues is in its 18th year of placing sculpture on public display throughout the greater Wenatchee area.
The award is named after the group’s founding member Adele Wolford who still serves on the board.
Guest speaker for the luncheon will be Portland artist Carole Turner, creator of the “Remergence” bronze along Wenatchee Avenue outside the Performing Arts Center. She’ll talk about her experiences creating sculpture internationally.
The luncheon is open to the public. Tax-deductible donations to Art on the Avenues are encouraged. Reserve by Oct. 26 by contacting artontheavenues@gmail.org or call 662-0059.
