Poll: McKenna, Inslee tied as ballots reach voters

Monday, October 22, 2012

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Washington's race for governor is tied.

A survey conducted last week while ballots were going out to voters showed that Democrat Jay Inslee and Republican Rob McKenna both had the support of 46 percent of voters. Inslee was faring better among women while McKenna was getting the support of 19 percent of people who voted for President Barack Obama in 2008.

The poll of 500 likely voters was conducted by consulting firm Strategies 360. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.

Respondents indicated they were supporting all of the state's leading ballot measures, with gay marriage ahead by 17 percentage points, charter schools up by the same amount and marijuana legalization winning by 16 points.

I think the marijuana legalization and marriage equality issues may each drag a lot of liberals out to the polls (though the latter may also get a lot of conservatives energized)

However, the Seattle paper is stumping heavily for McKenna, and he has demonstrated a bit of a Libertarian streak as AG.

Even when one considers that Inslee's strategy is focused almost entirely on the west side, this particular Governor's race could get interesting.

Hope somebody's watching closely if it comes to a recount!
