WINTHROP — A Bellingham man who was camping with a group north of Winthrop Sunday night was shot in the leg with a high-powered rifle and taken to a Seattle hospital.
Anthony R. Christofferson, 22, told authorities that he was moving a 7 mm magnum rifle in his tent at about 9 p.m. when he was going to bed, and it went off, said Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers.
The man’s brother drove him down the road and contacted medical services, the sheriff said. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where a spokesperson did not return calls this morning seeking his condition.
Rogers said deputies have been unable to locate the campsite to investigate the scene or interview any other witnesses.
The brothers told authorities they were camped with about seven or eight other men on the East Chewuch Road, about 15 or 20 miles from Winthrop.
