Trooper takes hit to stop Seattle wrong-way driver

SEATTLE (AP) — A Washington State Patrol trooper intentionally collided with a wrong-way driver on a Seattle highway in an attempt to stop him and prevent injury to others.

A spokeswoman, Trooper Julie Judson, says Trooper Andrew Boyer was able to minimize his collision, just before midnight Monday on Highway 520. She says he may be sore for a few days, but he's otherwise OK. The patrol car has front end damage.

The wrong-way driver continued and started driving the wrong way on Interstate 5 in Seattle before his car came to a stop in the University District. He tried to run away and jumped over a barrier and fell about 20 feet.

Judson says the 26-year-old Seattle man was taken to Harborview Medical Center with injuries from the crash and fall.
