Reichert to debate Porterfield in Wenatchee World-KOHO candidate forum

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

WENATCHEE — U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert and opponent Karen Porterfield will be at Wenatchee Valley College’s Van Tassell Center Tuesday to kick off two evenings of political debates sponsored by The Wenatchee World and KOHO Radio.

The matchup will be the first debate between the Auburn Republican and the Issaquah Democrat in their bids to become the first to represent the newly redrawn U.S. 8th Congressional District.

Here’s the full debate schedule:

Tuesday, Oct. 2

5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Reichert v. Porterfield. Moderator, Gil Sparks, attorney for Ogden Murphy Wallace.

6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Chelan County Superior Court judge candidates Alicia Nakata and Travis Brandt. Moderator, Rufus Woods, publisher of The Wenatchee World.

Thursday Oct. 4

Candidates for the state’s 12th Legislative District. Sparks will moderate both encounters.

5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Incumbent Cary Condotta (R, East Wenatchee) and Stan Morse (R, Chelan).

6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Incumbent Mike Armstrong (R, Wenatchee) and Brad Hawkins (R, East Wenatchee)

“We want a substantive, civil discussion of issues important to the voters of each race,” said World Managing Editor Cal FitzSimmons, who hopes to plan additional debates for some of the county races.

Candidates will each give a 3-minute opening statement and 3-minute closing statement.

A panel of three — two from The World and one from KOHO — will question the candidates. Each candidate will have 3 minutes to answer and 2 minutes for rebuttal.

Van Tassell Center is at the heart of the WVC campus. Seating is limited, but the debates will be livestreamed at wenatcheeworld.com and broadcast live on KOHO 101.1 FM.

Both recordings will be archived for later review.

I extend my most sincere appreciation to The Wenatchee World and to KOHO Radio for coordinating and hosting these debates. The issues before us and the people who ask to represent us warrant thoughtful consideration by all voters. It will be refreshing and informative to see and hear from each of the candidates.
