Swimmers and parents of little swimmers, it is that hot time of year when the water is oh so appealing, and our Columbia River beaches are easily accessible. It is important to note that our public beaches are not monitored for water quality. Citizens for a Clean Columbia did monitor water quality at Walla Walla, Confluence and Hydro parks two years ago throughout the summer, and found high levels of fecal coliform (poop). This was especially true on very warm days at Walla Walla and Confluence where the swimming beaches are somewhat enclosed in small bays and the water does not flow through as much as at Hydro.
If you see a lot of birds in the water and the weather is quite warm it is likely that the water contains higher levels of pollution. Have a safe and healthy summer!
