Rainne Dempsey

February 17, 1977 ~ August 4, 2013

Rainne Dempsey, aka Rainne Knight (Peterson), passed away suddenly, Sunday morning, August 4, 2013, in Seattle, WA, at the age of 36. She was also known as Heide Sparling, Heide Peterson, Heide Cash, Lorainne Timmons, Lorainne Knight, which she shortened to Rainne, and one year ago married to Jason Patrick Dempsey of SeaTac, WA, who is heartbroken.

Rainne was born on February 17, 1977, in Bellingham, WA. Her given name was Heide Linn Sparling. Her mother, Diana Lynne Sparling (Schwendeman), and father, Gregory Richard Sparling were both in the USAF and stationed at the 757th Radar Squadron in Blaine, WA. Her parents were separated, at the time, and divorced when Heide was three months old. When Heide was 21/2, her mother remarried Gregory Allen Peterson and they made Modesto, CA their home for the next 16 years. At the age of four, Heide’s new daddy adopted her and her sister, Melissa, was born. At the age of six, her brother, Brett came along. Heide had a fabulous childhood filled with camping, boating, trips to her loving grandparents’ home in Santa Barbara and the beach there, trips to Denver, CO to see lots of family, trips to Southern California to visit her cousins and Disneyland, lots of friends and sleep-overs, grand birthday parties, fabulous Halloween costumes, big Christmases and tons of wonderful memories. She went to Cosmetology school as a senior in high school at Modesto High School. Upon graduating both, she married Sean Cash in 1995. In 1994, her family moved to Wenatchee, WA and she joined them in late 1999 and divorced. At this time, she began to use her deceased maternal grandmother’s name, (Beulah) Loraine Timmons, which soon shortened to Rainne and fit her perfectly! In November 2000, she gave birth to a beautiful little boy named Riley and became a single mother and student at Wenatchee Valley College. She graduated from Central Washington University in Ellensburg with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 2005. Her family had moved to Maui, HI in late 2004, so she and Joseph Knight were married there in a ceremony on the beach in December, 2005. They made their home in Wenatchee shortly after, and in January 2008, gave birth to Kai Ian Ripley Knight. She was a HUGE Star Trek fan. Thus, Kai’s initials spell Kirk. Rainne worked for Columbia Valley Behavioral Health from 2006 to 2007, but found that job to be incredibly stressful and dangerous, so she returned to Cosmetology and then went to work for The Wenatchee World. She absolutely loved her job and all the people there. She flourished under Rufus Woods and, her last year there, she was the editor for the Douglas County Empire Press in Waterville and made several positive changes to that paper. Did I mention that she LOVED that job?!!! Rainne also loved dancing, especially swing dancing and was very active in the local Hepcats club. In the fall of 2011, Rainne left The Wenatchee World, as she and Joe moved to Seattle, where she went to work for Label Master. She and Joe divorced in early 2012, and she married Jason Patrick Dempsey in December of 2012. They had a fabulously fun Dr. Who costume themed “Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey” wedding ceremony and party a few months after. Rainne flourished in Seattle and has been seen on TV in commercials for BECU (Boeing Employee’s Credit Union). She has hundreds of friends and people who love her who are devastated and grief stricken. Her death was very sudden and there was nothing that could be done to save her.

When she was nine, she asked Jesus into her heart and was baptized soon after, of her own volition. Though we are grieving and missing her tremendously, we believe she is in the presence of her Lord and Savior. She had an incredible brain and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge… something that she passed down to her sweet little guy, Kai. She always had a book in her hands! I use to tell her that the world needed her brain to find a cure for AIDS and that cutting hair was a waste of her intelligence. Rainne was a very independent thinker and well versed in just about everything that was important to her. As a child, I would always tell her that “any old dead fish can float downstream.” I wanted my children to think for themselves and make wise, intelligent decisions about what they believed in. She took that to heart and is well known for her critical thinking skills and outspoken, multi-faceted and full of life personality… much like a big, beautiful Fourth of July fireworks display that leaves you in awe. When the show is over and the booms are gone, you are still marveling at the awesomeness. This was our Rainne. She was incredibly happy and content the last year. She left a huge void in our hearts and that of her husband, his family, little Kai and all of her dear friends.

Her parents are Greg and Dee Peterson of East Wenatchee, WA. Her sister, Melissa Peterson, is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC and lives in Knightdale, near Raleigh, NC. She will be married to “Alton” Mitchell Babb on September 28, 2013. Her brother, Brett Peterson, is a Chelan County Sheriff’s Deputy and is married to Megan Peterson (Van Winkle) and they live in East Wenatchee with their three sons, Dominik, Trey and Decker. Rainne’s grandparents are James and Phyllis Peterson of Palm Desert, CA. She is also survived by her grandfather, Ronald Schwendeman (Betty) of Yuma, AZ; her great-aunt, Irene McCullough (Gene) from Texas; uncle, Mike Schwendeman in South Dakota; uncle, Bob (JoAnn) Flynn of North Carolina; uncle, Lonnie Schwendeman of Denver, CO; aunt, Glenda (Chris) Byers of Denver, CO; aunt, Colleen (Eric) Bettinger of Denver, CO; aunt, Lora and cousin, Spring Sparling of Wichita, KS; aunt, Kelly (Phil) Williams of Wichita, KS; cousins too numerous to name; uncle, Rohn Peterson (Stacey) and cousins from Acworth, GA; cousins, Laurie and Lisa (David) of Spokane, WA. She was prededed in death by her grandmother, B. Loraine Flynn (Timmons); great-grandmother, Lora Fay Timmons (Grey); great-grandfather, Robert Clark Timmons Sr.; uncle, Bob Timmons, Jr.; aunt, Jackie Timmons; uncle, Steve Peterson; great-grandfather, Earl Peterson and his wife, Amy Peterson.

Dearest Daughter Rainne… you are near, even if I don’t see you. You are with me, even if you are far away. You are in my heart, In my thoughts, In my life…. Always. The soul would have no rainbow if the eyes had no tears. BIG, BIG Rainnebow in the sky. ~ Mumsy

Rainne’s desire was to be cremated and her ashes will be spread over just about every body of water in the world, through family and friends.
