It is with appreciation we note our representative to Congress, Dave Reichert, now counts himself among those who support allowing 12 million illegal immigrants residing with us to “earn” an opportunity to become legal residents and citizens.
In a radio interview last week Reichert indicated he is a rare House Republican who supports an essential element of immigration reform. Republican congressional leaders, even the Republican National Committee, would beg to differ. Amnesty, they call it. Reichert apparently calls it sensible and unavoidable.
This is progress. The crucial votes on immigration reform will come after this summer recess. Reichert, even if he is no backer of the already-passed Senate comprehensive bill, may see the truth of it — that resolution of our immigration mess will benefit his district, the nation and its economy. When Congress convenes comes the opportunity to do what is necessary and right. Reichert’s colleagues should take note.
