Fredrick Charles “Fred” Scaman Jr.

May 23, 1960 ~ December 21, 2013

Fredrick Charles “Fred” Scaman Jr., our loving father, husband, grandfather, brother and friend to many, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2013. Fred was born on May 23, 1960, in Yakima, WA to Delores and Fredrick Charles Scaman Sr. His parents moved to Wenatchee shortly after he was born and Fred grew up with his brother, Mike Scaman of Rock Island, and sister, Jill Vickery of Malaga. He attended Wenatchee High School and graduated in 1978, and continued his education at Washington State University for a business degree.

On June 2, 1984, he married his loving wife, Karolyn Hinton, as they met fighting fires for the DNR. Fred worked at the Wenatchee Gold Mine as an equipment operator for the duration of the mine. On July 4, 1987, son, David, joined the family. On September 28, 1989, daughter, Michelle, was born. The Scaman family lived in Wenatchee for seven years before moving back to the Entiat Valley in 1993, to build a beautiful log home on his wife’s family orchard.

Fred always loved operating heavy equipment and decided that he wanted his own excavating company. In 1999, Fred and Karolyn started and became owners of Columbia Valley Excavation L.L.C., here in the Entiat Valley. For the last 14 years, he had enjoyed working for various jobs around the state doing what he loved, driving heavy equipment and working with his wife and son, as David is a heavy equipment operator of Columbia Valley Excavation.

Fred loved life to the fullest and could always make a quiet room noisy. He had a way of making others laugh while being around him and just lightening the mood. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and taking his grandson, Conner, around the house on the four-wheeler or backhoe. Fred and his family were blessed on December 18, 2013, with a beautiful granddaughter from son, David and daughter-in-law, Heather Scaman, to add to the growing family. He loved going for road trips on his Harley Davidson motorcycle with friends as the last couple years they had traveled to Idaho, Montana and around the state of Washington. His family and friends will dearly miss Fred, as he will always be in our hearts.

A Celebration of Fred’s Life will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at the Federated Church in Entiat, located at 2150 Entiat Way, with Pastor Gary Posenjak officiating. Friends who wish may make memorial donations in his name to the Seattle Children’s Hospital. Please express your thoughts and memories on the online guestbook at Arrangements are by Jones & Jones~Betts Funeral Home, Wenatchee.
