Under 100 years ago :"Darius J.W. Murdock of Waterville was this week issued a patent for a pipe coupling. Murdock.......expects to make a fortune from his invention."
Is this pipe coupling still being used today? Are there any details / pictures of the coupling? Did it "bomb" or did Murdock "make a fortune"? Are Murdock's still in the area?

That's a very good question. I'll keep you posted if I find any follow-up on Mr. Murdock. If he did make a fortune, I'm sure I'll see it! Thanks for reading... Linda Barta, Old News coordinator

For what it's worth Todd, did you Google it? I came up with this interesting listing from the Patent and Trademark office. http://patimg2.uspto.gov/.piw?PageNum=1&docid=01048855&IDKey=8B2D72063FCC&HomeUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fpatft.uspto.gov%2Fnetacgi%2Fnph-Parser%3FSect1%3DPTO1%2526Sect2%3DHITOFF%2526d%3DPALL%2526p%3D1%2526u%3D%25252Fnetahtml%25252FPTO%25252Fsrchnum.htm%2526r%3D1%2526f%3DG%2526l%3D50%2526s1%3D1048855.PN.%2526OS%3DPN%2F1048855%2526RS%3DPN%2F1048855
I doubt that it is still in use. It appears to be similar to the old lead and oakum coupling and certainly intended for use with cast iron pipe. These days you won't see much cast iron used, or the lead and oakum, Even when cast is used or repairs are made in cast iron systems today, the fitter or plumber uses a "band aide" type clamp which is a rubber sleeve held in place with hose clamps.
Interesting though. I too wonder if he made any money on it. Just may do some more research! LOL!
