WENATCHEE — Emily Abbott is no stranger to the stage.
That showed Saturday night as the teenage theater veteran was crowned queen of the 2013 Apple Blossom Festival.
Her princesses are Madi Still, daughter of Michelle and Craig Still of Wenatchee, and Maggie Chvilicek, daughter of Brigid and Jeff Chvilicek of Wenatchee.
Abbott is currently playing the role of Sandy in Eastmont High School’s production of “Grease,” which is scheduled to open Feb. 21. Among her other theater roles were Liesl in Leavenworth Summer Theatre’s “Sound of Music” two years ago, Antonia in Music Theatre of Wenatchee’s production of “Man of La Mancha” this year, and roles in Eastmont High School productions as Kim in “Bye Bye Birdie” and Audrey in “Little Shop of Horrors.”
“I’m not afraid of the stage,” she said backstage after coronation. Still, she said, she was nervous during the pageant. “In theater, I’m playing a different role; this, tonight, is all me.”
Also backstage, but before the royalty was announced, Abbott serenaded the other candidates with the song, “For Good” from the musical “Wicked.” She said she chose it because it means that she’s grateful that she got to know all the candidates and “they’ve changed my life forever.”
Her parents, Jon and Tara Abbott of East Wenatchee, described their daughter as an energetic, positive, patient and kind person.
“”She’s a bundle of energy,” Tara Abbott said. “She never stops singing or whistling.”
Other awards, given just before the royalty was announced, were:
Most photogenic: Carli Robins, daughter of Danny and Vicki Robins.
Congeniality: Lauren Williamson, daughter of Lee and Kim Williamson.
Most original speech: Scarlet Graham, daughter of Robert Graham and Shana Kai.
Achievement: Chvilicek.
Community involvement: Jenaesha Iwaasa, daughter of Juel and Tanya Iwaasa.
The Lehman Johnson Award for service to the festival was presented to Homer and Peggy Wolfe, longtime supporters through the Applarians and the Lions Club.
